Malcolm ROSE

(1938 -2010)

In Life & In Heaven

YOU INSPIRE US

This memorial website was created in the memory of our beloved Malcolm Rose, who was born in the United Kingdom on 10 December, 1938 and passed away on 18 October, 2010 at the age of 71.

Malcolm was no doubt one of the greatest adventurers of our time.

He bought his beautiful yacht "Pittulie Pride" in Scotland in 1982 and for the next 26 years, he sailed her from port to port, sea to sea, continent to continent, allowing the wind to fill up his sails and to give wings to his dream.

Malcolm never thought it that important to circumnavigate the world, though he did sail round our planet Earth in a big irregular loop. For him, it was more important to enjoy his solitude at sea, feeling the wind on his face, and being part of the boat and all that was around him. He gained the most pleasure while he realized how small a human being was to nature and that he was part of it all.

Through his varied experiences and adventures, he gained tremendous knowledge and wisdom, which in turn, made him a most interesting man and a rare encounter for a great conversation. He was not born with the gift of language; nevertheless, he was a great story teller. When he talked, people listened and learned about things beyond their wildest imaginations. Because of his usually unique views on world affairs, some found him challenging, others found him profound.

Underneath the robust and cheerful exterior, Malcolm was a quiet and modest man with a dry sense of humour. Those who had the fortune to get to know him remember what joy he brought to them. He was so preoccupied with being creative to live life to the full, there was not a mean bone in him.

His recent motorcycle journey saw him whizzing past Patagonia, right down to the most southern tip of South America, and then turning around to meander north, reaching the most northern tip of North America in May 2010; another great adventure, which took him by surprise as he enjoyed camping in national parks, remote beaches, or just lonely places where only the wild animals kept him company.

Malcolm enjoyed his own company, but he was not a loner. He was very much a people person, making friends wherever he went. His love for nature also involved people as he saw that like him, we are all part of the great creation. He had great compassion and would have tears in his eyes whenever he heard of a huge tragedy on the radio, no matter whether it was in the most developed areas of America or the most deprived places of Africa.

Wherever he went, people were involuntarily inspired by his courage and thirst for freedom, at the meantime, touched by his love for life.

Here are a few leads on Malcolm before and after his fatal accident which brutally took him away from us.

Letter to family and friends sent from Alaska

After buying my Honda 250cc Rebel motorbike in Santiago I travelled to the southern tip of mainland Chile beyond Punta Arenas to start meandering north and 18 months later I arrived at Prudhoe bay Alaska's most northerly destination. The following is a summery of my log.

DATES. I left Santiago on 30 November 2008 and arrived Prudhoe Bay 28 Mei 2010.

NUMBER OF COUNTRIES VISITED. 16 and some more than once.

DISTANCE. 41000 miles plus about 1500 miles by ferries.

TOTAL COST. 15000 UK pounds excluding only the cost of the bike. ( say 30 pounds per day).

ACCOMMODATION. Camping about two thirds of the time plus staying with friends hostels and hotels.

BIKE PERFORMANCE. 100%

PETROL. 513 gallons.

BIKE MAINTENANCE. 10 Services / oil changes 5 new tyres 2 chains 4 spark plugs 2 air filters 1 set of clutch plates and break pads

NUMBER OF ACCIDENTS. 4 knock downs by other drivers 6 other accidents and just falling over.

From mid summer on Christmas Day a year and a half ago at the southern tip of South America I have followed the seasons to be here in Alaska at the end of Mei during the very rapid transition between winter and summer. To stand on the frozen Arctic Ocean at Prudhoe Bay marked the end of an amazing journey.
